What is the difference between reishi mushroom mycelium and reishi mushroom fruiting body?

1. To understand the differences between the fruiting body and mycelium of reishi mushroom, it is necessary to first understand the growth process of reishi mushroom:

Spores → mycelium → fruiting body → release of spores.

From the growth process of Ganoderma lucidum, it is clear that both are products of Ganoderma lucidum, but they have significant differences. The so-called mycelium is similar to the roots of plants; The so-called fruiting body refers to a plant’s fruit.

The volume ratio between the fruiting body and mycelium of Ganoderma lucidum is 1:10, which means that it takes about ten times the amount of mycelium to grow a Ganoderma lucidum. This is also one of the reasons why commercially available Ganoderma products made from fruiting bodies are several times more expensive than those made from mycelium.

2. The safety of reishi fruiting body is much higher than mycelium.

From the perspective of safety classification of healthy food, the consumption of reishi fruiting body has been over 2000 years history and can be directly used as food without any safety issues; Reishi mycelium has only been introduced to the market in recent years. Due to poor control of the fermentation process, it is prone to bacterial contamination, resulting in the production of various toxins that are difficult to detect. Therefore, toxicology testing is required before listing to see if existing potential toxicity.
